How should you start learning to draw?

Drawing is one of the oldest arts and people who do it are mostly very passionate about it. The ability to express yourself and your thoughts in a way that everybody can see it and relate to it is very attractive and compelling so many people would like to start drawing although they haven’t been doing it before or thought about it. If you are one of them, you should take some baby steps and think of how to start learning and what to think about at the very beginning.

  1. Motivation

You may already have scribbled a bit and you have arisen draw concern, consider what your motivation for drawing is, what is your aspiration? To get to work in the field of illustration, fashion, animation? If you are clear what your aspirations, you’ll want to follow that path.

This is your first thought. Forget the “I can or I cannot do it’’ etc. These are all myths, the reality is, it depends on you and your effort to get it, and if you want, you can.

If you do not have a clear answer to why draw, then it is likely to draw because you like it and that’s it, this is just as well, just might find you more in the experimental phase in which you try a little of everything in of your efforts to target a specific area.

  1. Start drawing

Once you have more or less clear the idea about your motivations and aspirations, next step undoubtedly is learning to take confidence with the pencil, some of the people draw directly in digital format, but for now it would be the best to focus on the traditional look, since this can be passed to digital more easily, and cannot find it and the vice versa.

You could try watching the videos of first steps and drawing techniques, which can be very useful and give you some tips and ideas on how to start getting comfortable with the pencil and let your hand be lead by your thoughts.

  1. Make small and quick sketches

Draw a lot, take the habit of discarding your drawings, although it may seem strange, the sooner you learn to let go of them, the more easily you will be able to advance. This is because you avoid committing to the drawing, spending hours trying to finish it, instead of working quickly and trying different exercises to practice more and improve your skills.

  1. The problem often occurs when you think too much

Do not focus on details, but to capture the essence of the poses you want to convey, drawing details is the time you invest in beautifying your drawing, but if you start from a poorly constructed foundation, what you do is try to dress the monkey in pestle place.

  1. Practicing creativity

That being said, you should find a place to play with your imagination, not only practice the theory but also have fun drawing what you want and when you want, so you will go to develop your own views about things and get out of that world cliché, plus you’ll use more your wits and creativity to apply what they learn in your own way of expression. This is very important if you want to cultivate your own style.

  1. A healthy mix between theory and game implementing your creativity will suit to go forward

An important note, do not look for your style, let it find you. Do not worry if you do not have a style clearly marked right now, is completely normal, although there are people who immediately start from a style, it also comes to you with practice and time.

  1. Get inspired, observe and learn from other artists

You learn a lot out there from the work of other artists. Look at the pictures of artists that appeal to you, study them because you will not only learn about how they came to draw their pieces but also their ways of thinking and expressing themselves, that helps a lot to develop yourself as an artist.

These should be your first steps and after taking them, you will always have more time to learn and go back to them if you miss something out. Being passionate and loving this art is the most important thing about it so if you have those emotions, you should just start finding a way to express them.
